What is it exactly? Well, its a childrens story; but its a childrens story for children of all ages. In a way, the older you are, the more youll get out of it. A good test of whether youll like it or not is: Do you like the Narnia books? If you do, you should enjoy this. Not that Im another C S Lewis, of course. Far from it. But thats the sort of story it is. Indeed, its Narnia-ness seems to be one of the reasons why I cannot get it published in a more conventionally manner than this. The editor at HarperCollins, for instance, (turning the book down) said that although it was a good read, Im sorry to say that we found it just a little too much reminiscent of Narnia and, perhaps, Tolkein. The editorial director at Reed Childrens Books thought much the same but added, My colleagues and I have been impressed by the excellent way you have worked out this fantasy. There are well-realised characters and a good story. Well, maybe one day Ill find a publisher for it — Hello! Is there anyone out there? — but in the meantime this web page gives me the chance to publish the book for myself.
